WALKABOUT AT WOORABINDA

Seeking a hand up not a hand out, the community of Wooribinda sees eco-tourism as a path to greaster self-determination, in a way that protects their culture and allows them to share their imptant story with others.

Despite Woorabinda having its own character, we want to create a unique eco-tourism experience for domestic and international visitors’ alike to help them identify the Central Highlands, amongst other things, as a place of rugged beauty and cultural heritage second to none around the world. Our eco-tourism proposal comprises 5 separate elements with the first being Blackdown Tableland National Park. Rising high above the surrounding plains the part protects deep gorges, spectacular lookouts and scenic waterfalls. Rock faces display traditional Ghungalu artwork.

Despite all of these wonderful attributes, travelling tourists with caravans cannot access Blackdown tableland, reducing the number of tourists who visit. Adjacent to Blackdown is Taunton National Park, home to the Bridled Nail-Tail Wallaby. This extremely rare animal was previously thought to be extinct for around 50 years until being “rediscovered” by a local fencing contractor from Duringa.

While access to the park is very limited, a sustainable and well managed programme can help facilitate opportunities for members of the general public to see these beautiful marsupials first hand and help build a greater appreciation of the delicate balance of our natural environment.

The Shire Council has land within the township of Duringa, which is proposed to be utilized as the accommodation facility offering a range of options including serviced van sites, budget/group accommodation and cabins/ villas / bungalows for those seeking something with creature comforts while still enjoying the rustic charm of Australia’s outback.
